Florida, Rediscovered

New "Foreverglades" Exhibit Housed In Steamboat Replica

No doubt your out-of-town guests this winter will want to spend a day warming up at the beach. But when they tire of sun and sand, why not show them a slice of Old Florida?

Head for the new “Foreverglades” floating exhibit from award-winning artist Sofia Valiente. Housed inside a replica of a 1920s steamboat, docked in the Stub Canal Turning Basin in Howard Park in West Palm Beach, it focuses on life in the Everglades – giving visitors an eye-opening look at the area, which was first settled in 1925.

“Valiente spent the past five years photographing residents, resulting in compelling portraits of the people, places and location that is too often overlooked in historical perspectives,” notes a press release.

Adds Valiente, a Belle Glade resident: “I decided to house the exhibition inside an accurate replica of a steamboat so that the context as well as the photographs could transport the imagination back into time and capture that enduring link between Belle Glade and West Palm Beach.”

“Foreverglades” is on view through February.
