In Living Color

Celeb-Favorite Artist Teil Duncan Publishes First Book

Teil Duncan immerses herself in color.

And her art – full of rainbow hues – has caught the attention of celebs like Busy Phillips, Emma Roberts and Sia, along with stylish brands like Anthropologie and Crate & Barrel.

The Charleston-based artist, known for her abstract, vibrant depictions of everyday life, just launched her first book. Aptly named “The Color Teil,” it not only includes more than 300 full-color images of her creations but gives readers insight into her artistic journey, personality and inspiration.

Although the Auburn University grad has been drawing and painting since she was a child, she was propelled into the limelight after posting her work – which ranges from figural drawings and animals to beach and pool scenes – on Instagram.

“Inspired by light, movement, surprising color combinations, social interaction and pattern, my goal is to infuse these elements and form abstracted, pixelated compositions,” she writes on her website. “No matter the subject, I strive to portray a balance of realism combined with loose abstraction, causing one to complement the other.”

Duncan, who is married to professional golfer Russell Henley, hasn’t forgotten her tumultuous path to becoming an accomplished artist.

“As a post-graduate entering into a devastated economic workforce, what was a 22-year-old art graduate to do? Wait tables,” she writes on the Auburn alumni website. “I juggled working at a restaurant, changing diapers at a preschool and taking commission paintings on the side.”
