The world premiere of “Jeanne du Barry,” starring Johnny Depp, will open the 76th Festival de Cannes. It will be screened on May 16 at the Grand Théâtre Lumière. The film is directed by the multitalented French actress, director, screenwriter and producer Maïwenn, who also plays the title role with Johnny Depp as Louis XV.

Disney’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” also is among those films slated to premiere there. The last Indiana Jones film to make its debut at the revered, invitation-only festival named after the city that hosts it was “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” in 2008.

The French Riviera-set festival, which is a who’s who of celebrities, filmmakers and more, has also secured “Killers of the Flower Moon,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone and Jesse Plemons. According to Variety magazine, this will be director extraordinaire Martin Scorsese’s first return to The Promenade de la Croisette with a film since 1985.

Having a film premiere at Cannes not only can boost its popularity in Europe, but also in America, as seen by “Top Gun: Maverick,” which was on last year’s list. It went on to make more than $770 million internationally, more than half its nearly $1.5 billion global gross, according to Variety.

Swedish director Ruben Östlund, will preside over the festival which runs May 16-27.

Cannes’ Marché du Film, which is held in conjunction with the festival, has named Spain its Country of Honor, meaning Spanish talent and films will be showcased with 4,000 films and projects in development presented across 33 screenings spaces.
