Tampa General Hospital Kicks Off Historic Expansion

Tampa General Hospital, already one of the largest hospitals in the U.S., continues to grow by leaps and bounds. It recently unveiled a $550 million expansion and upgrade plan to meet the area’s growing needs. It’s being billed as the largest master facility plan in the hospital’s history.

“Our vision at Tampa General is to become the safest and most innovative academic health system in America,” said John Couris, president and CEO of Tampa General Hospital. “It is critical that we continue to bring the most advanced technology and cutting-edge care to our patients in Florida and beyond.”

The expansion, which launched in June, includes a new $17.5 million intensive care unit with 34 new rooms. Four new floors, 12 operating rooms and 100 beds will be added to the Bayshore Pavilion. The Burn Center also is undergoing a renovation and expansion. Other improvements include the construction of a 15,000-square-foot, freestanding emergency department, new clinic space at the TGH Brandon Healthplex Oncology Institute, expansion of the hospital’s central energy plant and renovation of the main lobby at the main campus.

“This $550 million capital commitment allows us to invest in innovation and supports the creation of tomorrow’s TGH,” said Kelly Cullen, EVP and chief operating officer of Tampa General.

Construction is expected to run through 2026. Once completed, the expansion is expected to create nearly 6,000 new jobs.
