Ducks In A Row

A Lesson That Translates To All Parents

When August arrives in South Florida, we know it.

Air-conditioning units groan under the strain of excessive usage, pools become the focal point of the house and humidity wreaks havoc on that fabulous coiffure mere seconds after leaving the house.

Of course, you’ll surely see ducks waddling throughout neighborhoods. After all, they are an ingrained aspect of the South Florida landscape and particularly enjoy the afternoon downpours August brings. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot a mother duck with a row of ducklings trailing behind. Sometimes there are 10 or 12, other times, only one or two. I’ve lived in South Florida for over 25 years and still find myself watching mama ducks guide, protect and nurture their ducklings with awe and glee. When there is food nearby, the mother duck ensures all ducklings get their fill, when there is danger, she quickly corrals her pack. At times, it even appears she takes a deep breath and lets them roam a bit farther than she’d like because they are curious and want to explore.

It’s a simple lesson that translates to all parents: nourish your children, keep them safe and always (even if it may be hard) allow them to explore the world. As my youngest child enters his second year of college, I’m growing, adapting and enjoying watching him find his place in the world. Needless to say, that mama duck instinct is still intact (hence, all his favorite foods are prepared when he is home!), but the desire and yearning to see where life will take him grows strong.

Embarking as editor for The Boca Raton Observer has burgeoned similar aspirations. I’m humbled, elated and inspired to partake in the magazine’s growth — eager and excited to guide, nurture and encourage its continued exceptional journey, throughout the month of August and beyond.

Happy Reading!
