Bloomingdale's Justin Berkowitz On Date Night Style

by

South Florida is known for its laid-back vibe.

But, when going on a date here, it pays to take your style up a notch - which some men fail to do. Not only will a chic ensemble make a good first impression, but it can help bolster your self-esteem, says Bloomingdale's Men's Fashion Director Justin Berkowitz.

"At the end of the day, a man's outfit should help him project confidence. If he's not confident in what he is wearing, it will come through in his behavior."

So, to nail the perfect look for your next romantic rendezvous, read on for Berkowitz's sartorial dos and don'ts.

DO find the right style balance. The best date outfit is a blend of formal and casual - polished but comfortable. Berkowitz recommends pieces that work for your lifestyle, age and body type. He suggests a soft-shouldered blazer or a bomber jacket in nylon, wool or suede. Add a woven shirt or a crewneck tee to simple jeans or neutral cotton trousers. Complete the look with Chelsea boots or minimalist sneakers.

DON'T go too casual. "Athleisure in general should be avoided," he says. However, you can wear a hoodie or a track jacket if you balance it with dark jeans and a refined sneaker.

DO dress for your personality. Date night isn't the time to depart your comfort zone, Berkowitz says. "If you're more reserved, stick with elevated basics like a crewneck cashmere sweater or a bomber jacket in a neutral tone. If you are more of an extrovert, feel free to wear a little more color, a bolder plaid blazer or a printed short-sleeve woven shirt."

DON'T wear ill-fitting clothing. Avoid clothing that's too big or too small. "The two biggest mistakes guys make are buying jackets that are too boxy for them - the shoulders of the garment should not be wider than the shoulders of the body - and pants that are too tight. If it's obvious to the outside world that you haven't been skipping leg day, then you've gone too far."

DO keep jewelry simple. "Nice watch? Yes," Berkowitz says. "Stacks of rings or bracelets? No."
