A Subtle Sparkle

Stylist Hillary Tannenbaum On Accessorizing For Daytime Events

As the cooler months arrive, so, too, does South Florida’s charity season – and the question of what to wear from head to toe.

While piling on the bling is an acceptable way to accessorize for galas and other evening fetes, what should you choose for a more low-key daytime event, like a luncheon? We spoke to Hillary Tannenbaum, a longtime fashion stylist and consultant with Bergdorf Goodman, for her expert insight into appropriate daytime accessorizing.

Shine Bright

Tannenbaum loves a classic, elegant cuff as well as a stud or button earring, though diamonds are not required. “It’s the same premise as shouting versus whispering,” Tannenbaum says. “If you shout, a lot of people will hear you, but they won’t listen. I’d rather whisper and have a lot of people lean in to make sure they hear what I’m saying.”

Stay Warm

Even in South Florida, it can get a little chilly in the winter, so use layering pieces like car coats, wraps, cashmere capelets and long cardigans to stay warm and make a fashion statement, she says.

Stand Tall

For a daytime event, Tannenbaum recommends avoiding stilettos and instead choosing a lower-heeled option, like a pump or a stacked-heel shoe. “I think it’s really chic for daytime, and I don’t think the shoe has to be high to give you the height or the look you want,” she says. “Fashion is about math and proportion, and, if you balance the proportion, you can achieve the same thing with a flat.”

Carry On

When it comes to purses, Tannenbaum suggests a top-handled bag, a mini tote or a daytime clutch. And, while Birkins are nice, a status symbol isn’t always the best choice for the moment, she says. “You have to think about what you’re wearing. If your bag has embroidery or stitching and your dress has a pattern, it won’t be easy to make that work. Something has to be simple.” O
