Interior Designer Sarah Zohar On Modern Hanukkah Décor

by

Although Hanukkah – like most holidays – is all about tradition, that doesn’t mean you have to reuse the same old decorations year after year.

Ditch the fringed banners and plastic dreidels. Instead, elevate your holiday décor to chic new heights with the following tips from interior designer Sarah Zohar of Sarah Z Designs in Miami.

Tables Are Tops

Spruce up your dining table with a Hanukkah-themed centerpiece, Zohar suggests. She likes to DIY it: “I made a huge dreidel out of wood and designed it with all the letters. We used blue metallic papers and Swarovski crystals.” Whether or not you make your own, complement the centerpiece with a metallic table runner (she enjoys incorporating gold and silver, which match Hanukkah gelt), corresponding placemats and blue-tinged crystal. Underneath, a white tablecloth makes everything pop.

Light It Up

While ornate menorahs in brass and gold are mainstays in many families, those looking for a more modern approach should choose a sleek, minimal design, Zohar says. She prefers silver but mentions there are also many beautiful glass and crystal options.

Floral Accent

Add a natural touch to your Hanukkah décor with fresh flowers, she suggests: “Hydrangeas come in pastel blues and whites. If I do roses, I pull in the pinks and blues or the artificial dark blues and the whites to bring in some color.”

Kids Know Best

Children love Hanukkah, so get them involved in the decorating process, which Zohar does at home. “They make their own dreidels or their own menorahs. We incorporate their art on the table, and we like to display their art because I want them to feel like it’s a part of their holiday.” O
