Festive Flair, Florida Style

Dressing For The Holidays In South Florida Shouldn’t Make You Sweat

by

While there’s nothing quite like a palm tree decorated in twinkling lights, dressing for the holidays in South Florida when it’s usually on the warmer side can be a challenge. How do you maintain a festive holiday spirit and still keep your cool on nights where it could easily be too hot for a sweater? We spoke to stylist Diane Treganza of Miami Personal & Corporate Styling to learn about balancing South Florida weather with holiday chic so your festivities can stay stylish and smart.

Choose The Right Fabric

“Silk is a great fabric as it can be both warm and cool to the touch — perfect for the unpredictable ‘winter’ months in South Florida,” Treganza says. And while heavy velvet might not be an option, Treganza mentions there are lightweight velvets that can add winter-inspired yet South Florida-ready flair: she particularly likes them in jewel tones for the holidays. Lastly, she advises, lightweight knits are another great choice — a ‘tropical wool’ or cashmere blend, “a T-shirt weight” instead of a sweater, in styles like sleeveless tops, dresses or two piece sets. During the holidays, add knits with “shimmer/metallic yarn elements to make it dressier,” she says.

Accessorize Wisely

For Treganza, smart South Florida winters — and all the other seasons really — always include a pashmina. Throw one in your bag in whatever color you need; you can even keep basic colors like black and cream in your car like Treganza does for a quick addition of warmth and style. “Pashminas have become so affordable over the years you can [definitely] stock up (and they’re great for travel),” she says. Plus, she adds, they’re perfect for balmy evenings when you want to go sleeveless.

Shop Smart

While winter shopping in South Florida, you don’t have to compromise style or suitability. “Retailers in Florida are beginning to address the issue of having more ‘wear now’ options available,” Treganza says. She also recommends making a shopping list before you hit the stores, doing research online about what’s in-store and putting together a look book, to save time upon arrival. She also recommends companies like Rent the Runway for one-time outfits or monthly subscriptions. “It’s a fun, affordable way to try something new without breaking the bank,” she says. Just remember to order far enough in advance so it arrives on time.
