That Certain Sparkle

These New Lighting Trends Will Make Your Interior Design Shine

by

The more time we spend in our homes, the more beautiful we want them to be.

That beauty can certainly extend to — and be heightened by — lighting fixtures. Lighting is key to creating a stylish space, and nobody knows that better than Corey Williams, Lighting Expert and Lighting Manager at Judith Norman. Williams spoke to us about the top trends in lighting design to keep in mind when looking for a new, chic way to brighten your space.

Lithe And Lightweight

“Years ago, a lot more people were into traditional pieces, but every person now is changing all of that out because it’s actually too heavy-looking for South Florida with our beautiful sunshine and condos,” Williams says, mentioning that you also don’t want a fixture obstructing views inside or outside of your house. Transitional, modern pieces are a key trend these days, he says, suggesting lightweight, modern metals with a small amount of glass on them. Plus, you can mix both transitional and modern pieces in different rooms to add nuance and flair to your home design.

LED-ing The Way

“LED is the ‘in’ thing now, for sure, because it eliminates heat in your house,” Williams says, adding that an LED lamp can last 7-10 years. It’s also a great choice because it’s lightweight and can be incorporated into a host of custom designs. “LED has made light fixture-making phenomenal because of the way they can bend and put small bulbs into tight places now,” Williams says. There are even LED fixtures, he says, “that can be placed within the thickness of your drywall, so you don’t have to do any special construction.” It makes smart, stylish, sustainable home lighting that much easier.

That Coastal Touch

Sleek, clean Italian-style lighting design is also turning heads, especially since there are companies like Hammerton and Hubbardton Forge making Italian-style pieces with coastal finishing. This means their metals are treated so saltwater and sea air won’t cause them to disintegrate or tarnish after a few years. “A lot of people are getting away from that type so they can just have something that they can just turn on that always looks beautiful without worrying about it falling apart because of the salt air,” Williams says.
