As the school year begins, many high school grads move into college dorms.

And one of the best ways new residents can settle into their home away from home is by personalizing their space. We talked to Jessica Joyce, spokesperson for dorm supply staple Bed Bath & Beyond, about today’s dorm style trends and making a small space one’s own. 

Create a Haven

“When you’re not in class, with friends or visiting with parents, it’s important to give yourself a safe space to express who you are authentically and be comfortable,” Joyce says. To make it reflect their style, a student should create a gallery wall of artwork that feels personal and display items that make them feel at home, she says. She also recommends adding small pieces like a rug, statement pillows or wall tapestries for style and comfort. 

Less Is More

“Dorm rooms are tiny spaces, and, in most cases, you’ll be splitting this space with a roommate,” Joyce says. When shopping, students should think minimal and focus on bedding, lighting, wall art and accent pieces. For art, choose fun items that can easily be removed; Joyce suggests 3M Command Hooks for damage-free hanging. 

Get Organized

Stocking a small room with everything one needs is challenging but possible. “Think of uncommon spaces to store things, such as under the bed, on top of the closet or over the door,” she says. “Make room for friends to hang out with small-space furniture [pieces] that also double as storage, like a storage ottoman or foldable chairs.” If clothes won’t fit in a dorm closet, store off-season items under the bed in containers. 

Consider Today’s Trends

For Joyce, the bed is a dorm’s most important style statement. Popular dorm-bedding aesthetics today include glam (think faux furs, metallics and ornamental details), boho (a freewheeling mix of colors, patterns and textures) and classic (stripes, dots, plaids and florals). O
