Flavors From Afar

Big Easy Winebar & Grill Brings South African Delights To Miami

There aren't many places locally to indulge in food from South Africa, so we're happy to share the news about Big Easy Winebar & Grill in Miami.

There, diners can savor Jumbo Shrimp, marinated in African spices and tossed in a brown butter and wine sauce; the Big Easy Dip, a curry veggie dip with peanut green chutney and warm naan; and the Pulled Peri-Peri Chicken Sandwich. Other dishes with South African roots include the Bobotie Spring Rolls, with sweet ground beef and chutney, and Boerewors, lean farmer sausage.

The eatery - the latest hole-in-one venture from South African golf icon Ernie Els (who's affectionately nicknamed "The Big Easy") - has stocked the best of the country's wine, including blends from Els' own vineyards.

While Chef Mike McLaurin designed a menu that combines South African flavors and global cuisines, interior designers fashioned a casual yet sophisticated ambiance with a wood and brick interior.

"It is a culinary experience inspired by the cultural crossroads of South Africa's fresh-off-the-grill comfort food combined with spices, herbs and ingredients from the melting pot of the world," notes the venue's website. "Big Easy Winebar & Grill is positioned above the typical 'all day dining,' but is not a white tablecloth venue. It is fun, approachable, every day."

And for dessert? The Cape Dutch Malva Pudding, Chef's Seasonal Galette and the Nutella Bread Pudding underscore the global theme of the menu.

Big Easy Winebar & Grill is located in Brickell City Centre at 701 S. Miami Ave., Suite 339, Miami. For more information, call 786-814-5955 or visit bigeasymiami.com.
