Laugh A Minute

Louie Anderson keeps them laughing. His quick wit, self-deprecating humor and signature one-liners helped propel him to Comedy Central's coveted "100 Greatest Stand-Up Comedians of All Time" list.

The funnyman brings his comedy routine to the Broward Center of the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale on Sept. 29 at 8 p.m.

"Anderson is one of the country's most recognized and adored comics. Delivering his inimitable brand of humor and warmth to his fans, he shares the ups and downs of his life experiences, crafting routines that ring true for audiences while reducing them to helpless fits of laughter," notes the venue's website.

Anderson, a former counselor to troubled children, got his big break after his debut on the "Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" in 1984.

He told the audience: "I can't stay long, I'm in between meals," in reference to his weight - a topic he brings up frequently in his act.

But he notes: "Sometimes when I do a show, the audience just wants jokes, and maybe that's what they paid for. But I like the idea, I always have, of putting something in their pocket - something healing, loving and informational," the former "Family Feud" host told GQ.

Anderson has also guest-starred on sitcoms, including "Grace Under Fire," and dramas, like "Touched by an Angel" and "Chicago Hope," and he had roles in film comedies like "Coming to America" and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off."
