A Moving Tribute

Donna Summer Musical Captures Icon’s Illustrious Life

by

She’s hot stuff. We’re referring to none other than the musical star Donna Summer who took the world by storm with her talent.

Summer died in 2012, but her voice lives on — and in grand fashion in “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical,” which hits the Kravis Center stage May 20-26. The show, which highlights a score of more than 20 of her hits (“Bad Girls” and “Love to Love You Baby” among them) gives a behind-the-scenes look at her life.

“She was a girl from Boston with a voice from heaven, who shot through the stars from gospel choir to dance floor diva. But what the world didn’t know was how Donna Summer risked it all to break through barriers, becoming the icon of an era and the inspiration for every music diva who followed,” notes the Kravis website.

“This electric experience is a moving tribute to the voice of a generation.”

Summer sang for the first time when she was 10 — she stepped in when another singer at her church didn’t show up. The moment was defining for her.

She went on to sing chart toppers including “Last Dance,” “I Feel Love” and “She Works Hard for the Money,” inspired by a Los Angeles restaurant worker.

Summer won Grammys but she was multitalented — she designed her own costumes and painted artwork that was exhibited in galleries around the country.
