Child’s Play

Legos Come To Life At Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden

by

For most people, the thought of creating art with 700,000 Legos would be daunting. But for artist Sean Kenney it’s child’s play. He’s been crafting works of art with these tiny plastic blocks for years — and one of his latest creations is on display at Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden in Coral Gables.

Dubbed “Nature Connects®” at Fairchild, the Legos have been transformed into 30 giant sculptures (including a stunning butterfly). The exhibit, which has been wowing guests at botanical gardens, zoos, arboretums and science centers around the world since 2012, will be on display at Fairchild’s 83-acre paradise through Aug. 28.

“In this award-winning, record-breaking exhibition of art made with LEGO pieces by acclaimed artist Sean Kenney, the  whole family can marvel at gravity-defying and astoundingly precise structures while discovering new ways of looking at the connected world of nature!,” notes the website. “Sparking a joyful sense of wonder in those both young and young-at-heart, Nature Connects® asks: just as LEGO bricks interconnect, how is our natural world interconnected? At times whimsical, gripping, and awe-inspiring, the exhibition is sure to inspire budding artists, ecologists, botanists and builders to dream big!”
