Happy Hour Pandemic-Style

The Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) in Fort Lauderdale isn’t the first place that comes to mind for happy hour.

But, these days, expect the unexpected, and join in the fun as Island City Stage in Wilton Manors brings “Dixie’s Happy Hour” to the venue’s IMAX Theater Sept. 8 & 9.

In the show, solo artist Dixie Longate – the drag persona of American actor, writer and comedian Kris Andersson – explores her life in quarantine, including home-schooling, crafting and coping mechanisms. Longate, best known for her “Tupperware Party” show, reinvented herself after COVID-19 sidelined her one-woman show, “Dixie’s Never Wear a Tube Top While Riding a Mechanical Bull.”

“Dixie’s performance shows that laughter is the best medicine during this time,” says Martin Childers, managing director of Island City Stage, in a press release. “She tells outrageously funny tales and heart-rending accounts, including audience participation, a little bit of empowerment and homespun wisdom.”

Adds Joseph P. Cox, president and CEO of MODS, in a press release: “We’re excited to feature this two-night sneak preview of ‘Dixie’s Happy Hour’ that explores diversity through mixology. Dixie’s message of encouragement and kindness make her and the experience so special.”

The 75-minute show, replete with Southern charm, is geared toward adults. The event will be capped at 100 tickets per performance to ensure social distancing. O
