Dorothy Marcic wants women to get the respect they deserve.

And the playwright and Columbia University professor found the perfect way: she created the play Respect – A Musical Journey of Women, based on her book “Respect: Women and Popular Music.”

The musical revue — which makes it way to the Delray Beach Playhouse Jan. 28 - Feb. 13 — highlights the history of women in America, from 1900 to the present.

“From co-dependence to independence – from ‘Someone to Watch Over Me’ to ‘I Will Survive,’ it’s a journey that takes women from the promise of ‘I Will Follow Him’ to the defiance of ‘These Boots are Made for Walking’ through the cynicism of ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It,’” notes the playhouse’s website.  

Marcic, the author of 15 books and a former production assistant on “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” has a background rich in academia as well as the fine arts: She was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Economics-Prague, served as advisor to the US Ambassador of the Czech Republic and was a delegate to both the United Nations Economic and Social Development Summit in Copenhagen and the UN Commission on the Status of Women.
