Let There Be Art

Museum Of Contemporary Art Offers Virtual Youth Programs

The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami isn’t letting COVID-19 curtail creativity. And it wants to make sure others – especially kids – don’t either.

“The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) recognizes the need to enrich the cultural life of the community and connect with the community,” notes a press release. “MOCA is ensuring that kids stay connected to the arts with an array of free, creative art programs for the family this fall.”

Youth ages 13-17 can join the Virtual Teen Art Force program, where techniques will focus on drawing, textile design, sculpture and printmaking. Sessions are offered Monday through Friday from 4-6 p.m., and students can choose which days they want to attend. Free art supplies are available.

Next, Virtual MOCA miniMAKERS, designed for children ages 6-12, offers step-by-step artmaking experiences. Upcoming sessions are Nov. 7 & 21 and Dec. 5 at 2 p.m.

Held the first Sunday of every month at 11:30 a.m., Virtual Sunday Stories will captivate kids ages 1-5 as they join a live story-time, followed by a DIY art project. Nov. 1 will feature the lyrical lullaby “Sweetest Kulu” by Celina Kalluk and Alexandria Neonakis, while “Shante Keys and the New Year’s Peas,” a multicultural New Year’s story by Gail Piernas-Davenport, is the selection for Dec. 6.

Finally, MOCA also offers free at-home art projects “that pull inspiration from contemporary artists, techniques and accessible art making,” according to a press release.
