As the father of four children, Dr. Joseph L. Herman understands the needs of kids. So, it’s not surprising that he does everything possible to make his patients, ages 2 to 21 years, feel at ease in both his East Boca Raton and Wellington dental offices.

Children’s Dental Place of East Boca, for example, has a trained staff of all moms, in addition to his wife, Dr. Michelle Handel-Herman, who also practices dentistry there. They provide a safe, modern, child-friendly office complete with video games in the waiting room, a movie room and televisions in all the treatment areas.

“Most dentists do not want to treat kids,” Dr. Herman explains. “The dentistry is easy, but the behavior issues are the challenge.”

To overcome that problem, he utilizes BIOLASE Waterlase YAG dental laser, which combines water, air and laser energy for safe use on human tissue in the mouth. The Laser allows him to treat his patients without shots or drills (in most cases), the two dental instruments that provoke fear in patients.

As a result of all of his “stress-reduction” methods, Dr. Herman has great patient retention. His patients want to continue treatment with him even after they age-out, he says.

And, the way he treats patients sets the tone for preventing future adult dental ‘phobics.’

“Our job is to encourage good oral health through education,” Dr. Herman adds. “Every patient receives a toothbrush, dental floss and oral hygiene care instructions after each checkup visit. We also have a good prize box to reward great behavior.”

In his spare time, the Deerfield Beach resident enjoys spending time with his family, traveling with his wife, fishing, attending University of Miami football games (his alma mater) and going to the gym.

He’s a devoted supporter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation through the Celebration Exotic Car Festival. Held annually in Central Florida (near Orlando), this children’s charity event showcases North America’s largest collection of exotic cars, race cars, Hollywood movie cars, with iconic actors and celebrities, coming together to help children with life-threatening illnesses.
