Larry Feldman: From Subway King To Philanthropist

As he readies to become chair of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County in April, Larry Feldman looks back at his 42 years in business and volunteer service as preparation.

The CEO of Subway Development Corporation spent most of his life building his sandwich empire. Though he retains his title, with day-to-day operations now run by his son and other family members, he has more time to dedicate to philanthropic efforts.

“I grew up in the projects, so to be in a position where we can serve and support in this way has become incredibly important to my wife and me,” he says.

Feldman’s wife, Diane, first became involved about 15 years ago with the federation-supported Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services. Seeing how much federation support meant to people in need here and overseas, he got involved.

“I met people who told me they would not be alive without federation, and I knew I had to contribute my expertise and our philanthropy,” he says. “I am committed to helping ensure that these vital programs have the funding they need.”

The federation serves not only the approximately 136,000 Jews who live in South Palm Beach County but also those in Israel and around the world, providing support to more than 70 organizations. Its 100-acre campus is home to social service agencies, schools, residences for seniors and those with disabilities, and more.

Feldman says a top priority for his first year will be getting more people to understand why the federation is here and what it does – and to inspire them to share his commitment.

With anti-Semitism on the rise, security is another of Feldman’s key priorities.

“We continually build our capacity to strengthen the security of our Jewish institutions,” he says.

Feldman believes that what he has done over the last four decades has led him to leadership today.

“For some reason, I was born to do this at this particular time,” he says. “I am passionate to share how each of us must do our part for our community and our people, and how great the rewards are in doing so together with our federation.”
