A few months before graduating college, Gary Slossberg’s father asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up. He didn’t hesitate in answering “tennis pro” since that’s what he had been working toward most of his life.

Slossberg’s father, who was in the construction business, had different plans for his son and urged him to join the family business.

“I listened to my dad and trusted him,” says Slossberg, who more than 40 years later is a successful general contractor. He eventually took over the business and has owned the company for more than 20 years.

It wasn’t an easy transition for Slossberg who knew nothing about construction. “I spent all of my time on tennis courts, not construction sites,” he says. “It was not easy being the boss’s son, and I started from the bottom with a broom and a shovel.”

Slossberg not only survived, but also thrived.  He built National Home Building & Remodeling into what it is today. “We have built or remodeled more than 2,000 residences in the past 47 years. We have never been late on a closing. Our quality control is second to none,” he says.

Slossberg’s most recent project was an 11,000-square-foot home in Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club that sold for its full asking price of $10 million.

Slossberg attributes his success to making sure he understands his clients. “If you don’t understand what the client is truly trying to achieve, you cannot help them. That is why I have always insisted on having a relationship with them and keeping the lines of communication open.”

Most of the time the client is not at the residence during the construction phase. They hire him so they can sleep at night, knowing that the job will get done right.

“They put their trust and faith in me. I Facetime them and send them videos and pictures every week, so they know I am on it and won’t drop the torch, and that’s everything,” he says.
