John M. Strasswimmer, M.D., Ph.D.

Special Expertise: Dermatology

Specialties: Skin Cancer in Transplant Patients, Mohs Surgery

Board Certifications: Mohs Micrographic Surgery & Dermatologic Oncology

Dr. John M. Strasswimmer, who is double board-certified in dermatology and also in Mohs surgery and dermatology oncology, has focused on skin cancer for 18 years. “My patients either have skin cancer and want it done right the first time or have had an issue with treatment elsewhere and want it done correctly.”

Following training at Tufts, Harvard and Yale medical schools, he served on the faculty of Harvard Medical School at Massachusetts General Hospital before relocating to Delray Beach. He was surprised to learn the area lacked an academic medical center for patients with complicated skin cancer. He approached FAU College of Medicine and was appointed to full Clinical Professor for the past 10 years. He also founded the melanoma and cutaneous oncology program at Lynn Cancer Institute at Boca Raton Regional Hospital.

As a Mohs surgeon, he specializes in complex cosmetic skin reconstruction. “I offer comprehensive skin cancer care,” he says. “I remove the cancer, ensuring that the cancer is gone and reconstruct skin with advanced cosmetic techniques without general anesthesia. It is all accomplished in one morning.”

Prevention is key. “Every patient gets a customized skin cancer prevention plan.” Of particular concern are people who’ve already suffered severe sun damage such as those who golf, or who’ve had a kidney transplant. As a blended academic and private practice dermatologist, he introduced the first systemic medication to treat basal cell carcinoma to the country and has access to cutting-edge therapies through clinical trials that may offer nonsurgical treatment options for skin cancer.

The practice’s other board-certified dermatologists focus on complex medical dermatology. They offer light-based therapy for those whose acne might otherwise require them to take strong medication like Accutane and can help uncover the underlying cause of hair loss. They have no PAs or nurses, so you see the board-certified dermatologist every time.

A local and international humanitarian, he was selected twice as “Physician Hero” by the Palm Beach Medical Society, recognized as “Man of the Year” by the Florence Fuller Foundation and awarded a presidential citation by the American Academy of Dermatology.
