Lake Worth Playhouse Presents Neil Simon’s ‘Brighton Beach Memoirs’
Lake Worth Playhouse will present the opening night of Neil Simon’s “Brighton Beach Memoirs” on Nov. 15 at 8 p.m. Hailed as one of Simon’s finest plays by CBS and lauded by the New York Daily News as “in many respects the funniest, richest and consequently the most affecting of Simon’s plays,” the production promises an evening of humor, nostalgia and heart.
Running through Dec. 1, “Brighton Beach Memoirs” is part of Simon’s autobiographical trilogy. Set in 1937 Brooklyn, it follows 15-year-old Eugene Jerome, a boy navigating the ups and downs of adolescence while living with his family in a cramped, lower-class apartment. Eugene, who dreams of baseball glory as a New York Yankees pitcher and daydreams about girls, also faces the realities of his close-knit, complex family: his formidable mother, overworked father and worldly older brother, Stanley.
Adding to the lively household is Eugene’s widowed Aunt Blanche and her two young daughters creating, as a press release states, “a recipe for hilarity, served up Simon-style. The bittersweet memoir evocatively captures the life of a struggling Jewish household where, as [Eugene’s] father states ‘if you didn’t have a problem, you wouldn’t be living here.’”
As World War II looms, Eugene sees his innocence slipping away, marking the end of an era and the start of a new one.
Opening night will include two premium theater seats, plus a complimentary glass of champagne and hors d’oeuvres to enhance the experience.
