Neil Simon’s Pulitzer Prize-Winning ‘Lost In Yonkers’ Opens Palm Beach Dramawork’s 25th Anniversary Season
Palm Beach Dramaworks — a professional nonprofit theater company located in downtown West Palm Beach — has announced the opening of its 25th Anniversary Season with Neil Simon’s most celebrated play, “Lost in Yonkers.” The award-winning production, which earned the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for Best Play, will run through Nov. 24.
Set in 1942, this poignant coming-of-age story explores the complexities of family bonds and highlights themes of love, resilience and survival. “Two teenage boys, Jay and Arty, are left in the care of their Grandma Kurnitz when their widowed father, Eddie, in desperate need of money, takes a job as a scrap iron salesman traveling the South. With no one else to turn to, Eddie’s only recourse is to leave his sons with his hard-hearted, autocratic mother, even though he’s aware of the soul-crushing damage she did to him and his siblings,” a press release states.
When the play premiered in February 1991, Simon was already regarded as one of America’s most successful playwrights, having dominated Broadway for 30 years. In 1966, four of his plays ran simultaneously on Broadway, and in 1983, a New York theater was renamed in his honor.
Following the captivating anniversary lineup, Palm Beach Dramaworks will present “The Dresser” by Ronald Harwood (Dec. 20 – Jan. 5), “The Humans” by Stephen Karam (Feb. 14 – March 2), “Camping With Henry And Tom” by Mark St. Germain (April 11-27) and “Dangerous Instruments” by Gina Montet (May 23 – June 8).
