Whether it’s the HabCenter’s Wholesale Plant Nursery, HabCo Manufacturing, P.E.A.R. Program, Social Services & Developmental Training or HabCenter’s Supported Employment Program, the initiatives of the Habilitation Center empower the human spirit and encourage unlimited potential.
A single act of philanthropy in 1973 by the Palm Beach County Commission — the donation of 12 acres of land — started the dream of what would eventually become the Habilitation Center for the Handicapped, Inc. (HabCenter) in Boca Raton. Construction of the Center was funded by area residents, the families of those seeking services and multiple government agencies. In 1978, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit opened its doors to all adults with developmental differences and mental health challenges.
Since becoming the (first female) CEO of HabCenter in August 2023, Sherry A. Henry, 43, has continued the organization’s initiatives.
“In October 2023, I started the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Program,” Henry says.
“I also spearheaded the Center’s first Strategic Plan, with the support of the Board of Directors. And I created a new Hydroponics and Gardening Program, funded by Impact 100, in September, where clients harvest lettuce, tomatoes and herbs that they use to prepare meals in the cooking classes.”
Henry is especially grateful for her staff of 42 employees and started the CARE (Celebrating Achievement, Recognition and Excellence) Program, implemented around HabCenter’s Core Values (Educate, Empower, Engage and Enhance) Program, to honor those who excel in those areas.
“We have an amazing group committed to the clients’ well-being and to helping them accomplish their goals, live with dignity and respect and gain independence,” Henry explains.
“Also crucial is financial sustainability — to be recognized as a leader in providing career opportunities, social support, mental wellness and advocacy for our population by focusing on their unique abilities — and increasing community awareness, involvement and demonstrating HabCenter’s impact,” she adds.
She estimates that more than 2,500 clients, ranging in age from 22 to 76, have been enriched and empowered there.
“Our mental health counseling program, run by 30 staff interns, and our vocational program, which teaches clients to market themselves in a competitive, integrated environment, are most important.”
