The Museum of Discovery and Science knows how difficult it can be for those on the autism spectrum to sit still during a movie - especially when the sound is cranked up to ear-piercing levels.
So, the Fort Lauderdale venue launched sensory-friendly screenings at its AutoNation IMAX Theater.
"To provide a more sensory-sensitive environment for individuals on the autism spectrum, we will bring lights up and lower the sound in the movie auditorium," notes the website. "Audience members are welcome to get up, sing, walk, dance and shout without worrying about someone complaining."
The screenings, which will take place on the third Saturday of each month at 10 a.m., kicked off last month with "The Polar Express." "Dream Big: Engineering Our World" is scheduled for Jan. 19, followed by "Great Bear Rainforest" on Feb. 16.
"Because some have special dietary needs, families are allowed to bring their gluten-free snacks from home. Guests are also permitted to bring blankets or other small items that will make them feel comfortable," notes the website.
The screenings are endorsed by the Autism Society of Florida.
