Currently in South Florida, there are over 1.1 million food insecure individuals, and 1 in 9 people in South Florida remain uncertain about where they will get their next meal. To bring attention to the problem, Feeding South Florida wants you to go orange this September as part of Hunger Action Month.
The hunger-relief organization, which serves Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties is offering numerous events everyone can participate in.
There are opportunities to volunteer to sort food and pack meal boxes all month long. On Sept. 18, you can buy an orange moustache for $5 to wear to show your support for hunger-relief efforts on social media.
On Sept. 23, which is also Hunger Action Day, Okeeheelee Park in West Palm Beach will host the Outrun Hunger 5K.
“It’s important to remember that our community is still experiencing the effects of increased inflation with rising food costs, fuel prices, ballooning insurance premiums and increased housing costs,” says Paco Vélez, president and CEO of Feeding South Florida. “Earning at or below minimum wage and living on it in South Florida is not easy to do in this environment, this means more families will continue to need food assistance for a longer period of time as this trend continues.”
