There’s the Stanley Cup, the World Cup and even the Davis Cup, but did you know there is a World Paella Day Cup?
Sept. 20 is a day to celebrate the famous Spanish dish which originated in Valencia, Spain. Most people associate paella as being a meal with rice and a variety of other ingredients such as saffron, chicken, seafood and veggies all cooked in a single pan. And while it is, paella also means the pan in which it is made, so you eat paella out of a paella.
This year will be the fourth annual World Paella Day Cup which brings together chefs from around the world to compete for the prestigious title of the best paella maker. The event takes place in paella’s birthplace, Valencia.
The finalists selected a panel of industry professionals who, not only will take part in the contest, but during the week will also get to know Valencia by visiting the rice fields of the Albufera Natural Park, the Central Market and the Huerta de València. On Sept. 20, 12 finalists will show their expertise in preparing the perfect paella. The winner will be crowned “Best Paella Chef” and presented with a trophy, symbolizing their mastery of the iconic dish.
