Traditionally, spring break is a time for college students to travel, rest and relax.
However, this year, some higher institutions across the state have cancelled the annual March rite of passage to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Those schools include University of Miami, University of Florida, Florida State University and Florida International University. Some universities, like UF, extended winter break and eliminated spring break.
It’s all part of an effort to prevent a potential surge in cases from students who planned to travel, and run the risk of bringing COVID back to campus, says the UF student paper.
UM is doing the same – along with holding two Wellness Wednesdays during the semester to give students time off from classes.
