If you’re one of those people who can’t get their day started without a cup of coffee, you are far from alone. It’s estimated that three in four Americans, or 73%, drink coffee every day.
Because it is so popular here and around the world, it’s no wonder coffee has its own day — Sept. 29.
If you feel like there’s a Starbucks on just about every corner, you may be right. As of May, there were 16,482 Starbucks stores in the United States.
The coffee craze has a long history dating back to the 16th century in Arabia. And just like today, there were coffee houses called qahveh khaneh where people came to drink coffee, play chess and keep up on current events. It wasn’t until the 17th century that coffee made its way to Europe.
Today, Americans spend nearly $301 million on coffee and related goods each day, according to the National Coffee Association. Individually, 14.4% of Americans reported spending more than $40 a month in coffee shops. Comparatively, 11.4% reported spending at least $40 a month for coffee to make at home. Thirty-one percent spend $11 to $20 a month for coffee to make at home.
Specialty coffees are experiencing a boom with lattes being the most popular followed by espresso and cappuccino. And those single-serve coffee makers also have caught on big, with 40% of coffee drinkers owning one.
