Here are some health screening guidelines to help keep you in tip-top shape.
WOMEN
Breast cancer screenings
Mammography
- Age: 40 and over
- Frequency: Annually
Physical breast exam
- Age: 40 and over
- Frequency: Monthly
Breast self-exam
- Age: 20 and over
- Frequency: Monthly
Cervical cancer screening
HPV testing
- Age: 21 to 65
- Frequency: Pap test without HPV test every 2 years up to age 30, Pap test with HPV test every 3 years after age 30
Osteoporosis screening
DXA (bone-density testing)
- Age: 65 and over or starting at menopause with additional risk factors
- Frequency: Baseline testing with follow-ups based on results
MEN
Prostate cancer screening
Digital rectal exam and prostate specific antigen test
- Age: 50 and over; 40 and over for African Americans
- Frequency: Annually
WOMEN AND MEN
Cholesterol screenings
Lipid panel
- Age: 20 and older, or earlier if high-risk
- Frequency: Every 5 years or more based on results and risk profile
Colon cancer screenings
Screening colonoscopy
- Age: 50 to 75
- Frequency: Every 10 years
Diabetes screenings
Fasting Plasma Glucose
- Age: 45 and older
- Frequency: Every 3 years
