The animals living at Zoo Miami are getting lit for the holidays. Pink flamingos, along with lions and tigers and bears — oh my, are part of this year’s Zoo Lights at Zoo Miami. Now in its 15th year, the event kicked off Nov. 24 with a tree lighting ceremony and a host of other activities. It will take place every weekend through Dec. 30.
Each weekend there will be appearances from some of the zoo’s residents, as well as their keepers. There also will be visits by Santa and his nemesis — The Grinch. Take a river boat ride past snoozing gators and crocs, while you are dazzled by some one-million lights along the way. Guests are treated to live musical entertainment, holiday karaoke, storytelling, music and dance performances, arts and crafts and more.
There is a different theme each weekend including dress as your favorite animated Hollywood movie, or your favorite space movie character. Come to the zoo in your best holiday pajamas, or if you prefer, your ugly holiday sweater or crazy holiday outfit. No one will judge you.
The event is open to the public from 6:30-10 p.m. On the days when the light parties are held, the zoo will close at 4 p.m. and reopen for the evening. The zoo is home to more than 2,500 animals representing more than 400 species from around the world. During the holidays they are joined by even more (though not real) animals that are lit up all around the sprawling 750 acres.
