If the expression “it takes one to know one” holds water, then it makes perfect sense that Simone Biles, 19-time World Champion and six-time Olympic Medalist, added another weighty title to her decorated career becoming godmother for Celebrity Cruises’ latest ship, Beyond.
After all, like Biles, this extraordinary vessel is a trailblazer — setting a new standard in the world of cruising. The ship, which made its debut last April with a 10-night sailing from Southampton, England to Barcelona, Spain has just made its way to Fort Lauderdale to begin a winter season of five-to-nine-night Caribbean sailings that will run until May of next year. The third ship in the Edge Series (the other two being Celebrity Edge and Celebrity Apex), it comes fully loaded with star power (beyond Biles) delivering discerning travelers the best of the best. For starters, culinary icon Chef Daniel Boulud (known for a myriad of exceptional restaurants, cookbooks and television shows — and as Celebrity Cruises’ Global Culinary Ambassador) — showcases Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud, his first restaurant at sea. Wellness guru (and actor) Gwyneth Paltrow, CEO and founder of Goop, has come on board as the Well-Being Advisor, providing products and experiences of her iconic brand.
Luxury is etched throughout, with stylish architecture from Tom Wright (best known for his stunning design of Dubai’s legendary Burj Al Arab Hotel) and celebrated designers Kelly Hoppen and Nate Berkus. While there is so much for voyagers to experience within the expansive vessel, the staterooms, where you’ll hang your hat and call it a day, surpass expectations. They come with Infinite Veranda®, part of the Edge Stateroom where, with the touch of a button, the entire living space becomes the veranda, letting guests walk right out to the water’s edge. Other perks include eXhale® bedding and CashmereTM mattresses designed exclusively for Celebrity as well as a king-size bed in almost all rooms, to ensure luxurious sleep. Ultra-luxe rooms at The Retreat (a resort in and of itself) include gorgeous six two-story Edge Villas with private plunge pools, direct access to the Retreat deck as well as the 2-bed, 2-bath Iconic Suites (the largest in the fleet) offering floor-to-ceiling, panoramic views from atop the captain’s bridge — meaning guests are privy to a view as good as the captain’s. All-included perks like specialty dining, premium drinks, Wi-Fi and gratuities are included. A personal butler is on-hand to make sure all needs are met. There’s also a private sundeck with a 25-yard lap pool and sunken seating areas, restaurant (Luminae) and lounge.
It’s clear enjoying the outdoor spaces was a priority to the designers involved, most notably the various outward-facing sanctuaries celebrating the endless ocean views.
The Retreat, the Resort Deck and the Rooftop Garden, all a part of Wright’s vision, are examples of communal spaces that marry a breathtaking, sleek design with the magnificent sea and sky view. Wright is also responsible for the Magic Carpet, one of the best places to take in the views from the water’s edge. The cantilevered bar “floats” on the side of the ship offering al fresco drinks, dining and live music and entertainment, all hovering 13 stories above sea level.
The architecture inside is just as mesmerizing, starting with The Grand Plaza, a three-story space inspired by the piazzas of Italy and brought to life under the creative genius of Parisian design firm Jouin Manku. Lighting changes from warm and inviting to bright and dramatic as the day progresses, making for an unforgettable, vibrant space.
While there’s a total of 32 food and beverage experiences onboard, we suggest you first visit The Sunset Bar, where the Mediterranean-inspired design quickly transports imbibers to a gloriously relaxing setting, while providing an almost 360-degree panoramic view. There is also Celebrity Cruises signature Martini Bar (conveniently located in The Grand Plaza), offering “Flair” shows where talented mixologists wow the audience with complex tricks and cocktails. Martini Flights are a crowd favorite.
For those seeking a more intimate vibe, the quieter Eden Bar specializing in handcrafted cocktails beckons. It goes without saying that a visit to Chef Boulud’s restaurant, Le Voyage, is a must. Inspired by the award-winning Chef’s travels, you will find tantalizing dishes like Brazilian Moqueca featuring corvina, carabinero shrimp, squid, sweet pepper, coconut broth and cashew rice, or the Loup de Mer au Ras El Hanout — a delicate sea bass accompanied by heirloom carrots, saffron Israeli couscous and preserved lemon with Moroccan spices.
Fine Cut Steakhouse lives up to its name with the likes of Japanese Wagyu Striploin and 45-day Dry-aged Prime Bone-in Rib Eye. Hosted in Le Grand Bistro, Le Petit Chef is a unique dining experience that uses technology to create an immersive fusion of animation, entertainment and dining that should not be missed, especially for those traveling with kids. The fun and lively dinner offers a four-course pre-fixe menu paired with tabletop animation and projections that tell the story of a tiny chef projected onto each carefully placed table setting.
And while entertainment on cruise ships has always been an alluring factor, the programs and state-of-the-art facilities on Beyond are a cut above the rest.
Take The Theatre, for example, which offers a perfect view from any seat. A 20-foot-tall 4K LED screen comprised of 17 million pixels curves 110 feet around the stage and integrates with new floor projection technology guaranteeing a wholly immersive experience. “Elements” features jaw-dropping acrobatic performances paired with “air sculptures” — air blown into large sheets of flowing fabric creating dancing art along with a first-ever custom air fountain blow-out that floats over the audience. Broadway and West End musical fans will adore “Stage Door” where performances are accompanied by a full symphony orchestra recorded in The London Palladium, UK’s most iconic theatre. “Arte” immerses audiences in iconic works of art in a ground-breaking masterpiece that combines electrifying dance, high-flying acrobatics and mind-bending visual effects.
Celebrity Cruises’ Beyond can be as jam-packed with activity or as serene and restful as you desire. Whichever way you sway, or if you opt for a hybrid of both as I did, rest assured your time spent on this exceptional ship will be one overflowing with fun, excellent cuisine, tasteful design, exceptional vistas and unparalleled service and care.
