West Palm Beach’s panoramic waterfront is a gem.
And what better way to experience its glorious views than from floor-to-ceiling windows at The Ben? The new 208-room property, part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, is downtown West Palm Beach’s only waterfront hotel.
But that’s just part of its charm. Designed to reflect the city’s early days as an untamed tropical paradise – yet infused with modern comforts – it’s an experience rather than a place to stay.
And that’s evident in every corner, including the cozy living-room lobby and the rooftop oasis that stuns with its sparkling pool; private cabanas; fire pit; lounge; and vistas of Palm Harbor Marina, the Intracoastal and beyond.
Guests will discover rich textures and earth tones accented with lush greenery. From the hanging chairs in the lobby to the twinkling chandeliers and captivating artwork, it’s a stop-and-look kind of place designed to spark conversations.
That was the plan from the beginning: The pet-friendly hotel was inspired by Ben Trovato, a local home owned by writer Byrd Spilman Dewey and her husband, Fred Dewey, who co-founded the town of Boynton in 1898. Their house was the place for lively conversation and served as a haven for visitors like Woodrow Wilson and the Vanderbilts.
“Reimagined for today, The Ben creatively channels Dewey’s joie de vivre, her love of entertaining, her whimsical interests and personal passions,” The Ben’s website explains. “Much like the Ben Trovato Estate, The Ben is an unconventional hotel experience and a place for socialization, enjoyment and enrichment.”
The hotel plays tribute to the Deweys throughout: Byrd’s silhouette is featured in original artwork, and an elevator sports a life-size black-and-white photo of the couple.
Keeping with the quirky theme, guest rooms offer surprises like sliding bookcases that reveal a window into the shower and whimsical collage portraiture. Be sure to book a room along the east side of the building, where you’ll be treated to expansive Intracoastal views.
For an extra-memorable getaway, check into the Marooner Junior Suite, a 576-square-foot corner sanctuary featuring a wraparound balcony, a living room and a soaking tub.
Just as notable is the food, evident from the first bite at Proper Grit, The Ben’s signature restaurant. Executive Chef Andre Sattler helms the contemporary chophouse, where diners savor locally sourced fare like whole, fresh-caught snapper, filleted table-side, and Tomahawk steak for two, carved table-side. Other options include the bone-in pork chop, whole Florida lobster, Wagyu burger, pan-seared scallops and Florida wild boar terrine.
Drinks are just as enticing: The PB&J Old Fashioned melds Peanut Butter Skrewball Whiskey, grape jelly and a PB&J crostini, while Smoke on the Water combines Del Maguey Mezcal, Vulcon Tequila, bell pepper shrub, pineapple-lime-habanero tincture and tamarind chili salt.
The hotel’s downtown locale puts guests steps away from entertainment options on Clematis Street and at Rosemary Square. However, if you prefer a true staycation, there’s plenty to keep you busy at The Ben, including the 24-hour state-of-the-art fitness center, rooftop pool, sunset and sunrise yoga on the rooftop, and rental bikes.
Don’t miss Spruzzo, the rooftop lounge with high-tops, lounge chairs, a 360-degree bar and views to die for. Sip a handcrafted cocktail, global wine, housemade limoncello, Sangria of the Moment or local craft beer. Pair it with tasty fare, like steamed Hollander mussels, charred Spanish octopus, wahoo poke and skirt steak churrasco, for a satisfying evening.
All in all, The Ben is truly “a classic hotel for a new age.” O
