Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw said it best when he offered the sentiment, “A happy family is but an earlier heaven.” After all, it is embraced by those we care for most that we best savor a life filled with love and joy. With school out and summer in full swing, August is the opportune time to kick back and make priceless memories with your loved ones.
Which brings me to our fabulous August Family Issue packed with too many good reads to count! For starters, our editor Alona Abbady Martinez had the pleasure of chatting with beloved actor Andy Garcia. He talks to us about his family life — off and on screen — in our cover story “Favorite Family Man” (page 58). From his deep connection to South Florida to working with Gloria Estefan in his latest film “Father of the Bride” (which I loved!), this is one read you won’t want to miss!
Speaking of “miss” we were fortunate enough to have a conversation with Elle Smith, a.k.a. Miss USA 2021. In “Crowned For Success” (page 70) you’ll learn how this smart, beautiful, insightful and inspiring woman is helping to change the world of pageantry and beyond.
If you’re like me, you may have headed or still be heading on a family trip this summer, maybe for the first time in a while. While it’s always exciting to travel (I, for one, am grateful my adult sons still want to vacation with their mom and dad!), you may have encountered the growing problem of incivility, something that is sadly taking our society by storm. Our piece “Mind Your Manners” (page 64) will explore why this is happening and what can be done to bring more kindness into the mix.
We wrap up with a celebration of one of our favorite months in “All About August” (page 76) where we share interesting facts and figures about our eighth month. From pumpkins to clowns to Prince Harry, August has got it all!
Wishing you and your family all the best.
Warm Regards,
