Whenever I need a pick-me-up, I blast the classic Sister Sledge song “We Are Family” and instantly feel happy and whole. It’s not just the song’s catchy beat that I love but also its uplifting message of unity — whether it’s a sisterhood, the family you were born into or the one you choose to call your own.
Family provides safety, love, encouragement and growth, and what better way to celebrate those wonderful attributes in our August Family Issue than with this month’s cover celebrity Mena Suvari? In our feature “Her Leading Role” (page 60), we chat with the exceptional actress and get her take on her career, marriage and what she considers her most important role — motherhood.
Of course, family life comes with its challenges, and one of the most pressing today is navigating parenting in the digital age. Our poignant piece “Taming Tech” (page 66) addresses how to best manage this complex landscape.
Who doesn’t love a dynamic mother-daughter duo, especially when it’s the iconic aerobics queen and fitness star Denise Austin and her daughter Katie? In “Family Fitness” (page 72), we get an inside look at their journey to help America get fit. Denise and Katie have inspired countless women, and I am thrilled to share their story with you.
August is prime vacation time, and if you’re delaying that overseas trip you’ve been dreaming of, consider a closer-to-home (and more affordable) staycation. Our piece “Staycation Sensation” (page 78) offers top tips on how to make your staycation a luxurious getaway.
Whether you stay nearby, travel far, are surrounded by family or choose much-needed alone time, I hope this month is filled with positivity, self-care and indulgence. Take a moment to slow down, go for a walk, embrace your loved ones and enjoy the wonderful world we are fortunate to live in.
With warmest regards,
