Sometimes Valentine’s Day dressing can feel too predictable.
At a certain point, those same tones of bright red and carnation pink just don’t do it for us anymore, and we’re looking to try something new for a fun, fabulous date night. Luckily, there are still a ton of options when it comes to looking stylish on this special day with your honey by your side. We spoke to Cristina Cellini, fashion stylist, personal shopper and consultant of Nobodysugly LLC, for tips on staying chic while getting close this Valentine’s Day.
Dress Me Up
‘Tis the season for dresses, Cellini says. “We’re at the height of womanhood. I think this happens when [we’re trying]...to bring up the morale,” she says. She recommends midi dresses, which hit at the shin, or a minidress if you’re feeling bold. Skirts and slacks look too business-like for a big date night, she says. Choose fabrics like sateen or lace but leave your sequins at home this month because they read more holiday and New Year’s Eve; a softer look is key on Valentine’s Day.
Color Me New
If you’re concerned about dressing like a greeting card, take your wardrobe to a colorful new place with tones that are hot for this season: purple, cream and fuchsia. That famed Valentino pink, a bold fuchsia, is everywhere right now. It’s a bright turn from typical light pinks of yore, and you can accent it with bold reds. A rich purple like Pantone’s Very Peri is also hot at Tom Ford and Miu Miu, Cellini says, and makes a lovely pairing with gold accessories. A cream color is always a classic and combines beautifully with silver.
Follow Your Accent
Even though we’re in South Florida, you can still play with fun dress accents like faux fur and feathers for Valentine’s Day, Cellini says. You’ll see these on dresses and on jackets this season, especially from brands like Gucci and Alice & Olivia. When wearing garments like these, it’s important to keep your jewelry minimalist, so Cellini recommends a long, thin earring and simple, slim chains for a sensual look. Try any dress with platform shoes, open-toed mules or strappy stilettos for a style that’s also very on trend.
