Some people are happiest when they’re alone. Solitude brings them enjoyment. For others, flying solo is challenging. Some even associate it with rejection.
To feel happy alone, it’s important to build a healthy relationship with yourself. Since you do spend a lot of time with yourself, learn to enjoy it. “You don’t want to automatically feel uneasy. Being alone is part of life,” says Dr. KC Charette, a licensed clinical psychologist who practices in Boca Raton. “With practice, the experience of being alone becomes more comfortable.”
Here are some ways to become happy alone and be your own bestie.
Eat Out
Slowly experience being alone. “Create small opportunities to be alone,” says Dr. Charette. She suggests sitting at a restaurant alone rather than getting your meal to go. “See what it feels like to ask for a ‘Table for 1.’ Grow from the experience and ask yourself, ‘What can I learn about myself during this alone time?’”
Break A Sweat
Exercise releases endorphins, the feel-good hormones in your brain that make you happier. Do whatever you like such as walking, swimming or biking. (Spending time outside has been shown to boost mental health, as well.) Or hit the gym and take advantage of classes and machines.
Step Away From Social Media
Scrolling through your feeds often leads to sadness, stress and jealousy as you compare yourself to others. Remember that social media doesn’t reveal the whole story. You’ll never know if the social butterfly is truly happy. “Being alone is the experience of not being in the company of others,” says Dr. Charette. “This experience is neither inherently good nor bad (but we attribute meaning to it!).”
Make A Meal For One
Say goodbye to frozen microwaveable TV dinners — for one night at least. Make yourself a stellar meal. Set the table, use a cloth napkin and light a candle. And take up the entire kitchen as you cook your meal!
Plan A Solo Outing
Stay overnight at a bed and breakfast. Attend a music festival. See the hot new art exhibit. Watch a movie at the theater. Put it on the calendar so you can look forward to it.
Note: Seek help if you need it. If you’re feeling anxious, depressed or stressed, consider reaching out to a therapist.
