Back-to-school time is upon us, and, while some are cheering, others are tearing up.
Some kids are attending a new school. Others are returning to familiar turf but will have new teachers. Whatever the case may be, back-to-school jitters are normal.
Typically, they dissipate quickly, explains Christina A. Remek, Psy.D., a Boca Raton-based psychologist. However, if your child is excessively clingy and crying often, something could be wrong.
“It’s problematic if every day is a challenge and she’s still not getting used to it, even after a few weeks,” she says. “Someone or something else may be making her anxious.”
In that case, a chat with the school guidance counselor could help.
Dr. Remek offers the following suggestions to prepare your kids for day one and beyond.
Combat academic anxiety. It can be tough to suddenly do algebra when you haven’t seen an equation all summer. “It can create anxiety when you haven’t done something for a while and then have to start it up again,” says Dr. Remek. The solution? Review concepts with your child beforehand.
Help them help themselves. Simple calming techniques, like abdominal breathing, are very effective. “Practice so they have these tools if they’re anxious at school,” she says.
Pack with care. Put comforting objects in your child’s backpack, like a favorite cup from home. “Familiar objects make kids feel safe,” explains Dr. Remek.
Give them the 411. If your child is starting at a new school, visit it together before the semester starts so they’ll be familiar with the space. Frolic on the playground, or practice opening a locker.
Do a dry run. “Create that [school] routine again,” she says. A week or so before the first day, wake up early, get dressed and head out as you would on a regular school day.
Purchase something special. Get kids excited by buying back-to-school supplies together and letting them choose a fun new backpack or lunchbox. “Kids love that,” says Dr. Remek. O
