Delighting in a panoply of vibrant modal and syncopated sounds, the soulful sister sextet Isle of Klezbos brings vintage and original music to international audiences. From Yiddish swing and tango to melanges with cumbia and boogaloo, as well as spell-binding traditional dance and trance tunes, these women weave a gorgeous sonic tapestry with thrilling onstage chemistry. Levity meets gravity as their stratospheric solo skills complement versatile virtuosity blending astonishing brass & woodwind with gorgeous piano & accordion, upright bass and down-home drums.
PERFORMER BIO:
Isle of Klezbos approaches Yiddish musical tradition with loving irreverence and profound respect. Now in their 25th anniversary year, this all-gal sextet has toured from Vienna to Vancouver, launching a new album to follow up their award-winning debut “Greetings from the Isle of Klezbos” and acclaimed concert recording “Live From Brooklyn.” The band has been seen and heard on HBO, NPR, CBS Sunday Morning, PBS and The L Word as well as enjoying collaborations with artists such as Jill Sobule, Gregg Bordowitz and the Grammy-nominated, platinum-selling Scissor Sisters. The group’s own Off-Off Broadway hit “J. Edgar Klezmer: Songs from My Grandmother’s FBI Files” was praised by the New York Times for lively score & smart writing. Klezbos bandmates are alumni of Juilliard, Eastman, Berklee and Manhattan Schools of Music as well as Harvard’s Department of Russian History & Literature. New York Magazine lauds the ensemble for “cutting edge klezmer,” while the L.A. Blade calls them “rapturous and rollicking.”
