Stepping into Maíz y Agave is like visiting Oaxaca, a vibrant Mexican city rich in tradition and full-bodied flavors. Located in a three-story building on the corner of Miracle Mile and Le Jeune Road in Coral Gables, the restaurant offers an authentic Mexican dining experience with a twist.
The first floor, “El Patio,” serves guacamole and chips and corn tortillas filled with chicken or pork.
For the more adventurous palate, there’s Tostada Viscosa Pero Sabrosa, a large tostada with grasshoppers and maguey worm and Guacamole Campestre, smashed avocado and maguey worms.
Next door, Mastur Bar serves cocktails, from the classic margarita to drinks with names that translate to “mother’s heel” and “cowboy mouse.” There’s also a large selection of Mexican beers and wine.
The second floor dubbed “Los Balcones” features five out of the eight Oaxacan moles — a traditional Mexican sauce. Executive Chef Christian Moreno’s top picks include Crema De Jaiba, crab cream soup with Gouda cheese and Mole Negro with beef ribs.
Overhead a rooftop bar offers panoramic views, hand-crafted cocktails and a high-energy experience.
The live mariachi music three days a week adds to the authentic Mexican feel of the place, along with authentic artwork and craftsmanship.
“We want our guests to fully experience the real Mexico through the many facets of culture, cuisine and hospitality,” says Moreno.
