Ashley Judd, a Golden Globe and Emmy Award-nominated actress, social justice humanitarian and United Nations Goodwill Ambassador advocating for women’s rights, will deliver the keynote address at the annual Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services (JFS) 2024 Reflections of Hope Luncheon on Feb. 13 at 11:00 a.m. at Boca West Country Club.
The event aims to break the stigma associated with mental health illness while raising funds for the organization’s Behavioral Health Services. This branch supports individuals, couples and families dealing with personal, social and behavioral issues through psychiatric care, psychological evaluation and counseling.
“Mental illness doesn’t have socioeconomic or demographic barriers. It affects everyone,” says Sharon Fontini who, alongside Lisa Swill and Jill Swimmer, is one of the event’s co-chairs. “I am glad to be a part of this event as we work to end the stigma of mental illness because no one should ever be ashamed to address their problems or seek professional help.”
Swill explains that more than 50% of those suffering from mental health issues feel ashamed or lack access to the necessary healthcare. Swimmer adds, “The community has provided overwhelming support for our efforts to raise awareness of mental illness, which in turn helps us provide much-needed services.”
Judd, a vocal advocate for mental health awareness, will share her journey navigating the struggles she and her family have endured, including the loss of her mother, the renowned singer Naomi Judd, to suicide. A record crowd of 600 people is expected to attend.
In an exclusive interview with The Boca Raton Observer for the magazine’s January Health + Fitness Issue, Judd expressed her gratitude for the event and the nonprofit’s unwavering commitment. “Our mental health is important throughout our life span. Our needs may look a little different but the fundamentals in terms of our need for connection, belonging, safety and purpose stay the same,” she said.
Judd says she’s looking forward to underscoring to attendees that help is always available, including for family members who are supporting someone with mental health issues.
The Boca Raton Observer is the event’s exclusive media sponsor.
