Every year in the U.S., an estimated 15,780 children between birth and age 19 are diagnosed with cancer, making it the leading cause of death by disease for children in the nation, according to the American Childhood Cancer Organization.
Raising awareness about childhood cancer is crucial for helping families recognize signs and symptoms early, driving funding for research and treatment and creating support systems for those affected. September, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, serves as an ideal time to amplify this important message.
In West Palm Beach, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases by conducting patient treatment and focusing on cutting-edge research.
As part of its commitment to support affected families and bring attention to childhood cancer, the hospital is hosting its annual St. Jude Walk/Run on Sept. 21.
This family-friendly event invites walkers, volunteers and spectators to highlight St. Jude’s lifesaving mission: “Finding cures. Saving Children.” Participants can join the fun with a 5K walk or run, either in-person or virtually through the hospital’s app, which also facilitates fundraising by allowing users to request donations from friends and family.
Attendees will also have the chance to see St. Jude’s iconic red wagons, which bring comfort and joy to children undergoing treatment at the hospital. Visit the Healing Art Tent and learn how creative activities such as drawing, painting and sculpting boost physical, mental and emotional well-being through the Color Artwork. And don’t forget to stop by Kay Kafe Tent, renowned for its treats and refreshments served to patients during treatment.
St. Jude Walk/Run is scheduled for Sept. 21 at West Palm Beach Waterfront – The Great Lawn at 8 a.m.
