On Aug. 17, an award-winning new French drama, "Custody," will debut at Living Room Theaters FAU. The film, about a bitter custody battle, is the follow-up to director Xavier Legrand's Academy Award-nominated short "Just Before Losing Everything," and it has collected nominations and wins at several international film festivals since its debut.
Critics are also big fans of the flick, including A. O. Scott of The New York Times, who says that "Legrand... gives this closely observed drama the tension and urgency of a thriller."
And Entertainment Weekly calls it "powerful ... exquisitely acted ... one of the most realistic and heartbreaking performances by a child actor I've ever seen," referring to actor Thomas Gioria. Lea Drucker and Denis Menochet also star.
Inspired by such films as "Kramer vs. Kramer," "The Shining" and "The Night of the Hunter," the movie centers on divorced couple Miriam and Antoine and their son, Julien. The mother seeks sole custody of her child, claiming that the father is violent, while the father argues that the mother is the one to blame for tension in the family. A judge decides to grant joint custody, and little Julien is stuck in the middle of the escalating conflict.
