Musical virtuoso Paquito D’Rivera, renowned for his mastery in Latin jazz and classical composition, will perform at Delray Beach’s Arts Garage with the Paquito D’Rivera Sextet on Aug. 30. Boasting an impressive collection of 16 Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards, D’Rivera’s performance promises to be an exhilarating celebration of musical innovation and creative brilliance.
Hailing from Havana, Cuba, D’Rivera’s illustrious career began at age 10 performing with the National Theater Orchestra, and includes founding the Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna, the acclaimed Cuban group “Irakere” and the United Nations Orchestra — a 15-piece ensemble blending Latin, Caribbean and jazz influences.
While D’Rivera’s discography reflects his passion for jazz, bebop and Latin music, his contributions to classical music are equally noteworthy. His solo performances with prestigious ensembles include the London Philharmonic, the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony, the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra, the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra and the Bronx Arts Ensemble.
As the first artist to win Latin Grammys in both Classical and Latin Jazz categories, D’Rivera is also recognized as a talented composer. His works “often reveal his widespread and eclectic musical interests, which range from Afro-Cuban rhythms and melodies, including influences encountered in his many travels, and back to his classical origins,” according to a press release.
Beyond his musical achievements, D’Rivera is celebrated for his unwavering commitment to advocating for artists’ rights worldwide. According to the National Endowment for the Arts, “he has become the consummate multinational ambassador, creating and prompting a cross-culture of music that moves effortlessly among jazz, Latin and Mozart.”
For his Arts Garage performance, D’Rivera, who plays the clarinet and sax, will be joined by Alex Brown (piano), Oscar Stagnaro (electric bass), Mark Walker (drums), Pernells Saturnino (percussion) and Victor Provost (steel pans).
