Every year, thousands of volunteers across more than 100 countries head to their local beaches, rivers, lakes and canals to participate in the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), the world’s largest volunteer effort dedicated to preserving the marine environment.
Now in its 39th year, this global event is organized by The Ocean Conservancy and is locally coordinated by Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful (KPBCB), a nonprofit dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in Palm Beach County by supporting volunteer-based beautification initiatives and providing logistical supplies to volunteer groups.
On Sept. 21, the ICC will take place at various locations spanning from Boca Raton to Tequesta. Nearby, South Inlet Park, Lake Clarke Shores and the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge will welcome volunteers for beach/park, waterway and road and litter cleanups, respectively.
According to KPBCB, the ICC is more than just removing trash. It’s also an opportunity to gather valuable information about the types of sources of debris found. This data is later analyzed and tracked by experts to educate, influence public policy and create a positive behavioral change within the community. The Ocean Conservancy also uses the data to evaluate the impact of marine debris on wildlife and habitats, assist in the enforcement of regulations against illegal dumping and influence industries that manufacture harmful products to the marine environment.
