When it comes to learning about Boca Raton’s history, the Boca Raton Historical Society (BRHS) offers an extensive collection of archives and artifacts chronicling the city’s background. Since its inception in 1972, the nonprofit has been dedicated to collecting, preserving and presenting information to residents and tourists.
For those looking to learn more about the place they call home, BRHS, home to The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum, is bringing back its popular “Summer Sips & Sounds,” a three-part concert series, each one highlighting a specific decade through music.
In collaboration with the Festival of the Arts Boca, the series kicked off in July with “Music of the 1990s,” showcasing the rebirth of Boca Raton with the coming of Mizner Park. It continues with “Music of the 1960s” on Aug. 15 and culminates in September with “Our Hispanic Heritage,” demonstrating the impact of the Spanish-style architecture of the 1920s in the area.
In “Music of the 1960s,” attendees will experience a decade of change for “the little-farm-town-with-a-fancy-resort, [The] Boca Raton. FAU and Marymount (now Lynn University) opened and we finally got our own high school. The Boca Raton Community Hospital was born and a company called IBM came to Boca to manufacture small, mainframe computers,” states the Festival of the Arts Boca’s website. Performers Jeff Kaye and Krescendo will play 1960s music by artists such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Barbra Streisand and Liza Minnelli.
