Start your Thanksgiving Day with a fun and energetic tradition at your local Turkey Trot. As one of America’s most beloved races — and the oldest of its kind in the country — this festive run transforms every Thanksgiving morning into a celebration of fitness, fun and family.
With a rich history spanning 120 years, The YMCA Turkey Trot in Buffalo, N.Y., held its inaugural race in 1896 with only six runners. As participation has soared over the years, Turkey Trots have solidified their popularity as an annual tradition in communities nationwide. Not only do these holiday-themed races get you moving before the big feast, they also raise funds for local organizations and create a fantastic opportunity to enjoy quality family time.
Today, there are too many Turkey Trots to count across the United States. Locally, the Delray Beach Turkey Trot is returning for its 38th time. Scheduled for Nov. 23 at Anchor Park, the holiday event invites runners to don their favorite turkey costumes and enjoy a scenic 5K route with beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean.
Registration opens at 6:30 a.m., followed by music, entertainment and a fitness warm-up. At 7:25 a.m., participants will gather to sing the national anthem before starting the race.
