Step back in time with the award-winning musical “Hairspray” at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami Dec. 28-Jan. 2.
You’ll be transported back to 1962 where you’ll meet endearing teenager Tracy Turnblad whose dream is to bust a move on the local TV dance program.
Her journey includes rising above the bullying she endures for her weight, big hair and fashion choices. Along the way she becomes a celeb and uses her renown to advocate for racial integration on the show.
The message is powerful — as are the songs that make the show memorable. Audiences often find themselves singing along to hits including “Welcome to the 60s,” “Good Morning Baltimore” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat.”
The show has been a critics’ favorite. The New York Times gave this review: “‘Hairspray’ is “fresh, winning, and deliriously tuneful!” while The New Yorker proclaimed “Don’t miss this “exhilaratingly funny and warm-hearted musical comedy.”
“This all-new touring production will reunite Broadway’s award-winning creative team led by Director Jack O’Brien and Choreographer Jerry Mitchell to bring ‘Hairspray’ to a new generation of theater audiences,” notes the Arsht website.
