Substance Use and Mental Health Disorder Treatment and Recovery
Caron Treatment Centers, renowned for its expertise in treating mental health and substance use disorders, is transforming the way addiction is treated by focusing on brain and central nervous system health. Caron recently expanded the groundbreaking neurorestorative services provided at The Keele Medical Center, Caron’s 100,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art medical facility in Delray Beach.
“Addiction is a brain disease,” says Dr. Barbara Krantz, D.O., MS, DFASAM, MRO, Caron’s Florida Medical Director. “New advances in brain health are giving us unparalleled insights into the way addiction rewires the brain. Caron’s neurorestorative approach focuses on brain healing, improving brain function and rewiring the brain into healthier patterns so patients can more fully engage in the recovery process.”
Key to Caron’s neurorestorative model of care is understanding someone’s cognitive and brain function, which are assessed to identify deficits and areas of the brain that are over or underactive, providing a baseline on a patient’s brain health and highlighting potential areas of concern. Assessment elements include: Blood tests of biomarkers for neurohormones for sleep and stress and sometimes for specific diseases such as dementia; Neuro-mapping with Quantitative EEG; Cognitive proficiency screening; Heart rate variability (HRV) measurements to identify stress to the central nervous system; and Brain perfusion deficits and FDG-PET scans to identify and define deficits in blood perfusion and oxygenation.
Neurocognitive and psychological testing round out the assessment to provide a full patient profile that supports recommendations for appropriate interventions.
In addition to Dr. Krantz, Dr. Amber Deckard, Psy. D, NPT-C, Director of Neuropsychological and Psychological Services and Ciaran Tracey, MS, QEEG-D, Director of Neurocognitive Services, play key roles in Caron’s neurorestorative approach.
“Focusing on the areas of the brain that are impacted and using targeted neurotherapies and interventions are more effective than traditional interventions alone,” concludes Krantz. “These assessments also give us real data we can measure, not just at the end of treatment but months and years later. In essence, we can use real data to set better goals and deliver measurable, long-lasting outcomes.”
In the coming months, Caron will expand its program offerings to include insurance options.
